When Market Conditions Change, Reopen the Packaging Supplier Review

A packaging supplier decision can stay in place for years. That does not mean the assumptions behind it stay current.
Supplier reviews become habits
Packaging is one of those procurement categories that can become invisible when it is working. A format is approved, a vendor is set up, the line runs, and the same relationship continues through multiple purchase orders.
That stability is useful. It also means a supplier decision made under one set of market conditions can remain in place long after those conditions change.
The market changed again
Canadian buyers are dealing with another shift in the cost of selected U.S.-origin goods entering Canada. The impact is product-specific, so no responsible supplier should make blanket claims about what every imported package now costs.
The practical takeaway is simpler: if the economics behind a current packaging program have moved, the comparison deserves another look. That review can start with one SKU rather than a complete supplier change.
A useful comparison starts with the actual requirement
The strongest packaging review begins with what the LP already buys: format, material, closure, regulatory requirements, print or colour requirements, order volume and replenishment pattern.
From there, the supplier can be compared against the same requirement. This keeps the conversation grounded. It also prevents the review from turning into a generic debate about “premium” packaging versus “cheap” packaging.
The quote is the start, not the finish
Unit economics matter. So do the operational conditions around the unit.
Canadian LPs should also understand where finished inventory is held, what the replenishment model looks like, how changes are handled, what documentation is available and whether the supplier can support a custom requirement later.
A lower number can still be the right answer. A higher number can still be the right answer. The point is to compare the same problem across the full program.
Where MedLock fits
MedLock is a Canadian cannabis packaging company. We design in Canada, manufacture internationally using our own tooling, and hold finished inventory in Canada. Our portfolio includes standard cannabis packaging formats as well as custom development capability.
For LPs reviewing their current program, our ask is straightforward: give us an opportunity to quote one requirement. If the fit is there, the conversation can expand from there.
