Environmental preservation is important to us. That's why we make efforts to reduce our carbon footprint every step of the way. Our goal is to not only decrease our impact on the environment, but to also provide our customers with sustainable child resistant packaging they can afford.
Everything starts with product design. Our pop-top tubes and jars, for example, were designed as single units made entirely from polypropylene (PP) plastic with caps attached directly to the main storage vessels. This means our pop-top packaging is 100% recyclable and can be placed as is into a recycling bin, making for easy disposal. Furthermore, our products have recycling symbols and recycling codes on them so consumers can accurately and easily determine how to properly dispose of packaging after use.
Design is everything.
All our products are cleanroom manufactured. Our production facilities follow good manufacturing practices. We are always looking for new ways to reduce our carbon emissions during production. We are currently undergoing our ISO 14001 certification to enhance these efforts.
CannaLock child resistant pop top tubes and jars can now be ordered in ASTM D5511-18 certified biodegradable polypropylene plastic.
EcoPure® is a non-toxic, food-safe plastic additive derived from organic compounds. When added to our pop-top packaging, EcoPure® accelerates the rate at which our pop-top tubes and jars biodegrade in a typical landfill environment. Read our blog article for an extended explanation.
The ASTM D5511 is a standard test method used to determine the biodegradability of plastic materials in a high-solids anaerobic environment that mimics a landfill. An anaerobic environment is one in which free oxygen is not present. Landfills are anaerobic in nature and contain specific microbes that can digest materials in the absence of oxygen, including plastics.
Why is this important? Over 90% of the world's plastic waste ends up in a landfill. Regular polypropylene plastic can take anywhere from 20-30 years to break down in this environment. This equates to 7,305 – 10,958 days. By introducing the EcoPure® additive to the polypropylene, our pop-top tubes were shown to biodegrade by 6.32% in 45 days. This means that, in ideal landfill conditions, our pop-top tubes containing EcoPure® could be 100% biodegraded in a minimum of two years, as shown by our ASTM D5511-18 test results.
